The Skies Are Falling: Mathematics for Non-Mathematicians

چکیده
Abstract Mathematical education, both mass and university education of non-mathematicians, are in an abominable state, rapidly degrading. We argue that the instruction non-mathematicians should be dramatically reformed as substance style. With traditional approach, such a transformation would take decades, with unclear results. But we do not have this time. The advent Computer Algebra Systems gives mathematics community chance to reverse trend. make serious attempt seize opportunity. In present paper describe one project reform implemented at St Petersburg State University.

Mathematics, Mathematicians, and Mathematics Education
I am one of a growing number of research mathematicians who are substantially engaged with school mathematics education. Such outreach has a long and honorable tradition. In this lecture, I illustrate some of the ways that I think this can be helpful, and even essential. Upon his retirement in 1990 as president of the ICMI, Jean Pierre Kahane spoke perceptively of the intimate connection betwee...

We measure the quality of the services offered by a carrier usin...
متن کاملOrigins of the brain networks for advanced mathematics in expert mathematicians.
The origins of human abilities for mathematics are debated: Some theories suggest that they are founded upon evolutionarily ancient brain circuits for number and space and others that they are grounded in language competence. To evaluate what brain systems underlie higher mathematics, we scanned professional mathematicians and mathematically naive subjects of equal academic standing as they eva...
متن کاملSome Mathematicians Are Not Turing Machines
A certain mathematician M, considering some hypothesis H, conclusion C and text P, can arrive at one of the following judgments: (1) P does not convince M of the fact that since H, it follows that C; (2) P is the proof that since H, it follows that C (judgment of the type"Proved"). Is it possible to replace such a mathematician with an arbitrary Turing machine? The paper provides a proof that t...

As the cha...
